MD8000 from Media LinksThe MD8000 Media Transport System provides an unprecedented level of flexibility in content networking systems and removes the choice between today’s widely available, high-reliability SONET/SDH network and tomorrow’s low cost, high-performance IP Core based systems.

The MD8000 is designed to work transparently in both environments, even supporting simultaneous interconnections between both networking technologies to maximise media connectivity. In addition, the MD8000 does not require proprietary switching elements at each network node – individual signals can be switched between paths by standard IP routers, giving system designers amazing flexibility to combine low cost, flexible MD8000 shelves in the same network as high-performance IP core routers and switches.

The MD8000EX chassis contains 24 interface slots that can be used for either signal or trunk interfaces, with a total backplane capacity of 480 Gbps. The MD8000 low profile chassis contains 9 dual-mode interface slots and a backplane capacity of 180 Gbps. Interoperability with the Media Links HDGigE and the MD-003 1RU chassis give the MD8000 the ability to integrate small, low bandwidth network spurs into larger networks. Existing and planned trunk interfaces include SONET and SDH interfaces running up to 10 Gbps as well as both Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet rates. Existing and planned signal interfaces include all types of compressed and uncompressed SD and HD digital video, audio, a range of telecom rates and multiple Ethernet data rates. Plus, an advanced SNMP control interface provides visibility to all key module configurations and system status reports.
