MD8000 New

The MD8000 is Media Link's flagship product for media networking and provides highly reliable, pixel perfect delivery of video, audio and data over SDH/SONET, IP and Ethernet networks. MD8000 systems are widely acknowledged for their robust delivery of guaranteed throughput for every circuit transported across its full wire rate switch fabric.

Media Links MD8000 Front Image - LargeMedia Links Transport Equipment offers GFP (Generic Framing Protocol G.7041) for SDH/SONET encapsulation and network interface to handle connections to legacy multiplexing equipment or directly to carrier local and long-haul circuits. In this manner Media Links provides its customers with a legacy network interface acting as a gateway capable of seamlessly migrating traffic onto Ethernet and IP based networks.

Combination with Layer 2 Ethernet switching
The MD8000 product line includes an integrated, redundant Layer 2 Ethernet switch along with the media adaptation codecs. This capability allows the MD8000 system to be utilized as a single platform at any location replacing media adaptors, edge switching equipment and SDH/SONET grooming equipment. This significantly reduces the number of managed elements in the network and results in lower capital and operational expenses, as well as higher overall reliability.

Layer 2 Ethernet switching provides high performance 10Gbps per port throughput with minimum delay and jitter as well as providing complete wire speed, non-blocking switching. This Layer 2 switching capability can be used to aggregate/de-aggregate transparent or compressed media signals to a common Ethernet, IP or SDH/SONET trunk interface. In addition this switching capability can be utilized to provide drop/add/pass capability between trunk interfaces.

Combination with Trunk Interfaces
All trunk interfaces can be Ethernet/IP or SDH/SONETand all within the same chassis. This allows the MD8000 system to provide media and Ethernet services to end users while taking advantage of legacy SDH/SONET networks and allowing migration to Ethernet/IP networks.

In addition services within the MD8000 system can be prioritized and scheduled to allow guaranteed QoS for high value media content as well as best effort service delivery for less important signals. 802.1Q/P VLAN IDs and priority settings are used within the Layer 2 switch to manage QoS of individual streams.

By utilizing the combination of media adaptors, Ethernet/IP/SDH/SONET trunk interfaces and high performance Layer 2 switching, the MD8000 system provides unmatched performance and network flexibility while providing an extremely cost effective solution.

MD003 series modules include:

Charlie, as agreed I have just copied in all the ML website text about these modules, for you to edit down. I think the parts in red are redundant, as they apply when the individual modules had their own pages?

MD003-ETH

Modern video installations depend on high-quality, high-speed data communications almost as much as they depend on video circuits. With the MD003 E-TXRX and E-RXTX card set installed in an MD003 chassis, many different types of Ethernet and IP traffic can easily be supported.

Four completely independent, bi-directional Ethernet channels on each card ensure that data flows on the individual ports will be kept separate, allowing each flow to operate at full wire-speed rates and with total isolation. This permits data from different user networks to be transported with complete security and no possibility of data traffic collisions over a common fiber backbone. In addition, two analog audio channels are provided for intercom or low speed data connections.

Through the use of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), an MD003 system can support multiple channels of video on a single fiber, in addition to one or more groups of Ethernet links. Because the E-TXRX and E-RXTX are both bi-directional modules, each module occupies two slots in both the origin and destination chassis.

In addition to the E-TXRX/E-RXTX modules, the MD-003 series includes and (an?) STM-1/OC3 transmitter and receiver along with a universal video interface card that supports HD-SDI, SD-SDI, SDTI and DVB/ASI video signals.

MD003-GETR

The MD003-GETR 4-Port Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver provides a cost effective, robust single card solution for converged broadcast network needs. This video-aware, layer 2 Ethernet switch manages bandwidth for multiple input ports, allowing a single high speed optical Gigabit Ethernet link to be intelligently managed. Video signals are given priority whenever they are active, while data can be transported on the remaining bandwidth. When the video signals are removed, data bandwidth is automatically increased.

The GETR provides non-blocking, wire speed port aggregation that combines 4 standard Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and one optional 10/100 RJ45 interface into a single optical interface. The bandwidth on each port can be controlled in 1 Mbps increments.

Two modes of operation can be configured; VLAN mode and PORT mode. In VLAN mode, priority can be assigned to video traffic and provide provisioned bandwidth for specific VLAN Groups with Guaranteed QoS while other traffic is best effort. In PORT mode, video traffic is assigned priority based on port order from 1-4. In each mode, non-video traffic speeds up to full bandwidth when video is not present at the input.

Industry standard SFP optics are used in the optical transceiver port to support common sparing with other fiber transport equipment. The optical port can also be rate-limited to ensure compatibility with carrier service level agreements.

In addition to the E-TXRX/E-RXTX modules, the MD003 series includes an STM-1/OC3 transmitter and receiver along with a universal video interface card that supports HD-SDI, SD-SDI, SDTI and DVB/ASI video signals.

Media Links' HD-GigE compression codecs can be used with the GETRin the MD003 carrier-class 1RU shelf to provide a compact, cost effective multi-service IP transport solution.

The MD003-GETR is ideal for HD, SD, DVB-ASI video transport over IPnetworks as well as shared use with file transfer, VOIP, Internet access and other IP applications. Combining multiple IP services onto a single fiber reduces the need for remote switches on the network and uses fewer ports on core IP routers.

MD003-STM

Combining standard telecomm signals with uncompressed video transport has never been easier than with the MD003 series from Media Links. With the MD003 STM-1 TX and STM-1 RX, both SDH and SONET signals can easily be transported alongside a variety of video formats. Through the use of optical Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM), multiple signals can be combined onto a single fiber with no interdependency, and each will arrive intact at the far end of the link because of forward error correction on every circuit.

Many popular video, audio, voice and data multiplexers have SDH/SONET STM-1/OC3 interfaces, which can all interface directly to both the MD003 SMT-1 TX and RX units. Complete, full bandwidth transparency of the transport link ensures that all protocols embedded within the STM-1/OC3 frame structure can be transported, including ATM, Packet over SONET and Frame Relay. At the far end of the circuit, connections can be made to other multiplexing equipment or directly to local and long-haul circuits provided by carriers.

Both unidirectional and bidirectional circuits can be constructed with these units. One-way transport is often useful for compressed video and program audio applications. Two-way circuits can be constructed by using a transmitter and receiver module at each end of the circuit and employing one wavelength for each direction of transport.

In addition to the STM-1 TX/RX modules, the MD-003 series includes a 4-channel Ethernet transmitter/ receiver along with a universal video interface card that supports HD-SDI, SD-SDI, SDTI and DVB/ASI video signals.

MD003-VidMod

The MD003 Universal Video interface is a key part of the MD003 system, providing a single optical TX/RX card set for all types of video signals.

Configuration settings are a thing of the past with the MD003 Video Transmitter and Receiver modules, which automatically adapt to any valid HD, SD, DVB-ASI, or SDTI signal. Automatic, in-band Forward Error Correction (FEC) eliminates bit errors that may occur from long fiber runs or poor quality splices and connectors.

Through the use of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), multiple signals can be combined on a single fiber up to 16 channels using economical CWDM, or 32 channels using high-powered DWDM.

In addition to the Universal Video interface, the MD003 series also provides an STM-1/OC3 telecom signal interface and a quad 10/100 BaseT Ethernet interface.

MD2000 Series from Media Links

The MD2000 HD processing system comes with a 16 slot, 2RU frame and supports a variety of high performance signal processing modules. All modules are hot swappable and independent of the rear I/O modules which allows for easy maintenance. The frame also supports hot swappable primary and secondary power supplies and a controller card for SNMP management.

HD-GigE HD Compression Codec and IP Video Gateway

The HD-GigE IP Gateway transports HD-SDI/SD-SDI/DVB-ASI signals over IP networks and offers a cost effective alternative to traditional video transport services. The flexible, HD intraframe compression codec produces a high quality video signal that can be transported over Gigabit Ethernet networks. Standard Definition and ASI signals are automatically detected and passed through transparently.

By utilizing field by field encoding, the entire codec process adds less than 10 milli-seconds of end-to-end delay to the video signal. The encoder can generate bitrates ranging from 251Mbps to 586Mbps, providing flexible control of the Gigabit Ethernet bandwidth to suit various applications. These codecs can also transport up to 16 channels of uncompressed AES audio and are capable of transporting Dolby® E.

HD-GigE output is compatible with a wide variety of IP network equipment. Signals from multiple devices can be combined using standard IP switches to share local and long distance facilities. Random bit errors and single lost packets are corrected utilizing robust forward error correction. Multiple lost packets or short term network failures are corrected through optional automatic packet retransmission.

The HD-GigE resides in the MD2000 series multi-purpose frames and the MD-003 1RU hybrid frame. Dual redundant power supplies and modular rear I/O connections provide maximum flexibility and reliability. A SNMP compliant controller with built-inweb browser ensures that the system can be controlled and monitored locally or remotely.

Holographic Telepresence from Musion

Communication technology progresses in leaps and bounds. Printing, radio, the telephone, television, the internet and now – holograms.

Holograms have broken out of the world of science fiction and fantasy and are about to become common currency between London and New York, Sydney and Mumbai, Shanghai and Moscow. Live and life-size 3D TelePresence holograms can now interact with their remote audiences, whether they are a band performing on stage, a politician delivering a keynote speech, or a CEO holding an interactive meeting with colleagues around the world.

Until now the general understanding of TelePresence has been hazy. Many people assumed it comprised merely a very refined high definition screen technology. Others pictured holograms of heads and shoulders with very little movement. For standard TelePresence, both assumptions are largely true.

There is, however, another kind of TelePresence. Musion’s Eyeliner technology has developed life-size holographic figures with full motion and with no latency between sound and image. Using a high-speed (20mbites/sec) MPLS Internet connection it is, quite simply, transforming the future of communication.

So, if you want to make a major speech, you can stride the stage, not just sit at a desk. If you want to use 3D motion video images, they appear seamlessly beside you, not on a separate monitor. You can communicate in real time – no time lapses – with both on-stage colleagues and audiences. Eyeliner is a system that is fully bi-directional and interactive, you can see them just as clearly as they can see you. Just about the only thing you can’t do is shake their hands – or at least, only virtually.

All of this is possible only with Musion Eyeliner® foil technology. But its uses go far beyond the boardroom or the political stage. Entertainment, education, design and engineering collaboration, product launches – the list goes on.

For a video demonstration of the Holographic Telepresence application, visit here. But there's nothing like being there and seeing it!

MDMax Studio Infrastructure Switch from Media Links

3.2 Terabit High-Capacity, Non-Blocking Video/Audio/Data Switch

The MDMax™ offers enormous switching capacity for any type of studio infrastructure. By allowing all types of signals to share a single common infrastructure, the MDMax can provide a stable, unified platform for all the many types of signals used in a modern studio – video, audio, voice, real-time data and file transfer. The use of common 10Gbit Ethernet interfaces provides easy adaptation for all of today’s major media signal, and provides a smooth migration path to future types.

Each port on the MDMax supports multiple simultaneous signals, unlike other broadcast switches. Each of these signals can be routed independently and multicast to any combination of outputs through the switch fabric. Capacity of the switch is limited only by bandwidth, not by the total number of signals. This allows a single port to handle up to 5 uncompressed HD signals, or a much larger number of SD, DVB/ASI and other signals. Literally thousands of signals can be controlled and switched through a fully configured MDMax system, far exceeding the capacity of even the largest crosspoint router.

The MDMax connects directly to the MD8000 using either short-reach or long-reach optical transmitters and receivers. Interface cards for HD, SD, DVB/ASI, AES Audio and T1/E1 signals have already been developed, with more to come in the future. Data sources and destinations that are already equipped with 10Gbit Ethernet interfaces can be connected directly to the MDMax.

BARRACUDA from HaiVision

Barracuda ClusterBARRACUDA™ delivers high performance H.264 encoding in a uniquely compact form factor. For standard definition encoding needs, the BARRACUDA adheres to HaiVision’s Encode Once design, offering the ability to deliver multiple streams at different resolutions and bitrates to multiple destinations. Supporting a wide variety of IP streaming standards, the BARRACUDA is an ideal contribution tool for almost any application. The BARRACUDA also supports both forward error correction and encryption, making it a perfect fit within HaiVision’s Video Furnace System 5 end-to-end H.264 IP video solution.

Integrated with Video Furnace System 5. HaiVision’s Video Furnace System 5 is an end-to-end IP video system that provides network resiliency through forward error correction and absolutely secure video distribution to the “zero footprint” InStream™ player and the STINGRAY™ set-top box through the support of AES encryption. The BARRACUDA supports these critical standards so that users can be confident that the video is 100% secure – from the point of encoding all the way to the viewers. The BARRACUDA provides end-to-end confidence that only those who are allowed to view specific content can access that content, and that they cannot record or copy that content directly.

Efficient H.264. The BARRACUDA is based on the highly Efficient H.264. The BARRACUDA is based on the highly efficient H.264 compression standard, saving over 50% of the bandwidth and disk space required by MPEG-2 IP video deployments. The BARRACUDA accepts Composite, S-Video, and Serial Digital Interface (SDI) standard definition inputs. It also supports both balanced and unbalanced stereo audio as well as digital audio embedded within the SDI signal. The BARRACUDA can produce H.264 streams at full resolution and full frame rate at up to 8 Mbps, and yet with built-in downscaling and partial frame rate support can emit streams as low as 150 kbps.

“Encode Once” technology. The BARRACUDA marries the most advanced IP video networking features with the power and ubiquity of the H.264 standard. Supporting HiLo Streaming™, each BARRACUDA can encode the same incoming SD source using two different encoder settings simultaneously. For example, one setting might support full resolution full bandwidth for LAN distribution and another setting might provide CIF resolution at a much lower bandwidth for internet streaming. In addition, up to 8 H.264 streams can be emitted by the BARRACUDA, each stream having different network settings and different encapsulation such as Transport Stream and QuickTime RTSP. A single BARRACUDA with a single video source can simultaneously power diverse delivery systems allowing companies to encode their live video once and deliver it across their networks and the internet, without having to introduce intermediary trans-rating systems that reduce reliability and add cost and latency.

Extreme Performance in a compact Form Factor. The BARRACUDA is based on HaiVision’s progressive ASIC / DSP mini-blade architecture and is available as an ultra compact appliance for single channel encoding or within a 4U chassis that can contain up to 21 BARRACUDA H.264 encoders for high density challenges. The BARRACUDA encodes standard definition video into H.264 in well under 100 milliseconds.

Easy. Although the BARRACUDA is complete with the latest compression and networking features, it remains an easy to use, easy to deploy, robust appliance. Users can control the BARRACUDA through its intuitive web interface (complete with on-line help facilities). Integrators may opt to control the BARRACUDA over IP or serial port via its comprehensive command line interface or even through SNMP. Additionally advanced encoder control is available directly through HaiVision’s Video Furnace System 5.

H.264 Compatibility. The BARRACUDA fully supports H.264 video compression and AAC audio compression, industry standards that have been adopted by every major company in the IP video market segment. End-to-end solutions rely on seamless interoperability. HaiVision’s applications team takes compliance, third party, and quality assurance testing seriously. The BARRACUDA is interoperable with industry standard set top boxes, with haiPLAY™ (HaiVision’s open source free performance soft player) and VideoLAN’s VLC player. With the release of HaiVision’s Video Furnace System 5, the BARRACUDA is also integrated with and compatible with the Furnace Portal Manager, the InStream player, and the STINGRAY™ set top box, providing a complete end-to-end H.264 IP video distribution solution.

Quality Assured Network Streaming

Because Every Packet Counts!Zixi logo

Streaming video over contended networks is challenging! Especially if you need to do it real-time, without delays or pauses. You can never be sure that all your packets are going to get through - and, even if they do, they don’t necessarily get there in the right order. Forward Error Correction (FEC) is commonly used to overcome these issues - but that fix just adds more problems. As well as more delay, it increases the bandwidth requirement in an already restricted network environment! That means that you either have to reduce the rate, and therefore the quality, of the encoded stream, or allocate more bandwidth to make room for it. Moreover, FEC is not immune to packet loss; so it is not a reliable solution by any means.

Zixi’s Video Operating System (VOS) is different. It’s patented ConvexPushTM technology syncs the sending and receiving systems and resends only the packets that don’t get through. Then the Receiver makes sure that the decoder gets all of them in the right order. Zixi makes better use of the available bandwidth - which delivers better quality video, more reliably, at lower cost.

Key Features

  • Instant Start
  • Continuous Play
  • No Re-buffering
  • Low Latency
  • Codec Agnostic
  • Any Resolution - Including HD

Architecture

Zixi VOS is delivered as a software solution. The Feeder and Receiver applications are available in Windows® and Linux compatible versions. They sit between your codecs and the network, and stream to a Zixi Broadcaster located out there, in “the cloud”.

In fact, while there are a number of Zixi Broadcasters situated at key strategic points around the Globe (so there will be one close to you), the Zixi protocol ensures that distance does not degrade performance, as it nearly always does with other distribution systems.

For use on a private network, or where other factors make it desirable, the Broadcaster can also be licensed and located on your network.

The Broadcaster receives the incoming streams and checks to make sure they are all there, then resends them to as many Receivers as required. It can behave as a multicast rendezvous point, or an Internet Streaming Server. Whether you use a Zixi Internet Broadcaster, or manage your own under private license, the terms of use are contracted on throughput.

Applications

From broadcast contribution services to Internet TV, Zixi can deliver! The list of possibilities is practically endless, but consider:

  • The savings that could be made by using the Internet to backhaul news feeds in place of expensive SNG channels
  • Using a broadband connection for an HD Teleconference
  • Training seminars
  • Real-time high resolution security CCTV monitoring
  • Medical consultations in HD
  • A global High Definition Internet TV channel
  • Sports events on the other side of the World, close enough to real time to allow betting

In fact, anything that needs to start up rapidly and keep running smoothly with very low end-to-end delay. Point-to-point or point-to-multipoint. Around the World on the public internet, or across town over a private network.

MD6000 from Media Links

Uncompressed Long Haul HD TV

MD6000 Video Transport SystemThe MD6000™ provides high performance video transport system over SDH/SONET Networks.  Advanced technologies, including error correction, hitless protection switching, and differential delay adaptation allow flawless transport of the most demanding types of video signals.  Uncompressed HD-SDI, SD-SDI, SDTI, STM-I and DVB/ASI signals along with 10/100BT Ethernet can all be transported over a variety of networks, including OC-48/STM-16, OC-192/STM-64 or dark fibre.

Hitless Protection Switching ensures delivery of pure, uninterrupted video signals even if the underlying SONET/SDH or IP network suffers a momentary outage or a 50msec protection switch.  By using redundant paths, and performing a packet-by-packet comparison of the incoming signals, the MD6000 can prevent minor or major network faults from impacting valuable video signals.

IP technology is key to the performance of the MD6000.  Every incoming signal is divided into standard IP packets prior to transmission.  This benefits users in several ways:

  • Forward Error Correction can be applied to each packet, eliminating the few inevitable bit errors that occur on fibre optic links
  • Packet sequence numbers allow rapid, automatic detection of lost or delayed packets, which can be corrected with hitless switchover.
  • Smooth migration path from traditional SONET/SDH networks to IP core networks can be easily accomplished through an available software upgrade to support PPP protocol or to support Media Links video routers.

This approach also avoids the issues that can result from compressed video, including:

  • Delays in both the encoding and decoding process
  • Hidden compression artefacts in the video image
  • Painstaking process to match encoding parameters to video/audio/data signal source with uncompressed video, its just "connect and go" regardless of the video format and frame rate - 1080i, 720p, 525/625 line, 50, 60 or 59.94 Hz, plus all types of embedded audio and data

Key Capabilities

  • Long haul uncompressed HD TV video transport across SONET/SDH and IP Networks
  • Hitless Protection Switching
  • Bit rate up to 1.5Gbps
  • IP Encapsulation
  • Bi-directional Functionality
  • Automatic Error Detection
  • Reed Solomon Error Correction
  • Interleaving
  • Minimal End-to-End Delay

Key Interfaces

  • Tributary Interfaces:
    • Uncompressed HD-SDI/SD-SDI/DVB-ASI
    • SDTI (SMPTE 305)
    • 10/100 Base T Ethernet
    • OC-3/STM-I

If there is only one YOU in the company and there isn't any backup, or the thought of your technical mastermind being sick or leaving is unbearable, we can help remotely manage the audio & video networks that we install for you. Most of the products are available with web based remote management capability, accessible via a VPN or remote desktop.

The UK Office can provide you with an ongoing offsite network monitoring service, or be another member of the team should you require more consultancy based advice and development of systems.

IPTV Systems

IPTV SystemsIPTV is a technology set that allows standard and high definition TV 'programmes' to be assembled, scheduled and 'broadcast' over an IP network, typically within a single organisation.  The 'programmes' can be a mix of original content, bought-in content or subscription services.  The schedule is collated into an Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) in the same way that Sky and Freeview do for public services. Viewers can then select from the EPG and that 'programme' will be delivered to their PC or set-top box.

We have worked with HaiVision/Video Furnace many times and always been impressed with their system quality, robustness and useability - and recommend their System 5 technology.
