RTE Chooses Harris Intraplex NetXpress Multiplexers to Support Digital Radio Content Delivery
WINNERSH, England, October 15, 2009 — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has provided a large Intraplex® NetXpress™ multiplexer solution to Irish national broadcaster RTÉ Transmission Network Limited (RTÉNL) to support a major digital upgrade of its radio distribution network. More than 70 NetXpress audio multiplexers were installed in numerous locations across Ireland to support digital content delivery of radio programming, representing one of the largest deployments of NetXpress technology in the world.
"As this is a significant project for RTÉNL, we wanted to work with a manufacturer that could not only supply the equipment, but also support us for the lifetime of the system infrastructure," said Eamonn Reid, head of projects for RTÉNL. "Since this is a major upgrade to our radio programme network, we must be able to trust that the solution will continue to meet our needs for many years. The Intraplex NetXpress multiplexers have performed well and met all of our requirements, including flexibility, reliability and manageability."
Local Irish dealer Broadcast Video Services Ltd. (BVS) worked with Harris to provide the 72 NetXpress multiplexers to RTÉNL. The Harris multiplexer install occurred within the context of a comprehensive digital upgrade of RTÉNL's entire contribution and distribution networks. The upgraded contribution network connects all RTÉ studios from around Ireland into the RTÉ headquarters in Dublin. The upgraded distribution network is built in a dual-ring architecture, providing main and standby feeds from studios for RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM, Radio RnaG, Lyric FM and Today FM radio services to the main transmitter sites in the country.
Harris and BVS worked together to provide all pre-installation configuration services, staff training, remote network monitoring during the installation, project management and front-line support. Disaster recovery provision is set up from regional studios.
"The multiplexer installation at RTÉNL is significant for Harris not only because of the scale of this installation, but also because Harris is clearly seen as a trusted supplier in the context of a major, long-term technology project," said Richard Scott, vice president, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) operations for Harris Broadcast Communications. "Harris is always innovating and leading the way in the broadcast industry, but we also have a strong legacy of stability that we feel is a major factor in the success of high-profile projects such as the RTÉNL network upgrade."
